Sylacauga is no longer famous just for the meteorite that struck Ann Hodges (no relation) in 1954. Nope. Sylacauga Alabama is also home to the original Phlaphappies. You've seen them everywhere and you probably own some. Admit it.

When it's cold, phlaps are down and they keep your ears covered and warm. When it warms up, phlaps up! These hats are winter wear that is stylish and practical and they just bring a smile to your phace.

Why call them "phlaphappies"? Because life is serious enough and these hats with the practical ear flaps look a little whimsical, don't they? Ergo... phlaphappies!

The history of Sylacauga Phlaphappies

Our inspiration for Phlaphappies (besides growing up in Northern Wisconsin) was Phritz, the basset hound. His phloppy ears were so adorable and yet functional at the same time. Nature didn't bless us with similar protection to keep out the wind and the cold, but we do have opposable thumbs! So we began making our own phlaps and they work just great.

We've seen folks who took huntin' trophies that they had phlapped up (although some looked suspiciously like road kill) and we even know one lady who had a cat, Phil, who died after an unfortunate accident, and she took him to a taxidermist. Seems old Phil used to wrap himself around his owner's head while she slept and she loved the idea of making sure he could keep doing that forever. The taxidermist got a little help from his wife who was handy with a sewing machine and now Phlaphappy Phil is still keeping his owner's ears warm. That might seem a little extreme, but who's to say what phlaphappies should or shouldn't be made of? If it makes you happy...

My little granny used to knit something phierce, and she could make anything out of a skein of yarn. We all grew up with her special creations and they have helped make us the people that we are today! Our phirst phlaphappies were all knitted till we got the idea to try making em out of other stuff. And while we don't believe in namedropping, you may have seen Phlaphappy hats on movie stars, athletes, politicians and even superheroes!

There aren't any places or occasions where you can't wear your Phlaphappy! It's pretty warm down in Sylacauga, but we've seen Sylacauga Phlaphappies galore during huntin season. They can be hard working, or casual, playful and phun, businesslike and evening-wear appropriate to keep your ears covered wherever you may be. You know that you can lose a lot of body heat through your uncovered head, although there is some dispute about how much, and it's our belief that hat manufacturers have been doing us all a disservice by phorgetting the phlaps! You can phold them up when your ears are toasty, or phold them down for that comforting warmth. And there's the added side benefit of drowning out a lot of external distractions and turning the chaos into soothing white noise.

The bottom line is, phlaps are phun AND phunctional! Cover your ears and send your phlaphappy photos to Sylacauga Phlaphappies at CoverYourEars.org!

Talladega County, home of Kymulga Grist Mill, DeSoto Caverns, the Talladega Super Speedway and Cheaha Mountain is now also home to the Sylacauga Phlaphappies!
